PFM AND AGRICULTURE
Agriculture is the backbone of the country’s economy. It accounts for 30% of GDP and generates over 80% of national export earnings. The agriculture sector employs 64% of the country’s workforce and contributes to food and nutrition security. However, a growing population, declining soil fertility, unreliable rainfall, reliance on just a few staple crops, and
small holding sizes combine to trap many small-scale farmers in a cycle of low yields and persistent poverty. The Ministry of Agriculture is one of the key ministries in the Malawi Government.
